Plate Boundaries (Tectonic Hazards) Flashcards
Constructive Boundary
Two continental plates move apart which creates volcanoes.
example of a constructive boundary
mid-Atlantic ridge
Destructive boundary
When oceanic and continental crusts move together the oceanic plate is forced under the lighter continental plate the friction causes the melting of the oceanic plate which may cause earthquakes and magma to rise up through cracks
example of a destructive boundary
The Nazca plate has been forced under the south American plate which formed the peru-chile trench
collision boundary
When two continental crust go into each other it causes a collision both are pushed up and cause fold mountains
example of a collision boundary
The andes
conservative boundary
This happens when plates slide in opposite directions and rub against each other. Once the friction is overcome then the plates slip past each other abruptly causing an earthquake
example of a conservative boundary
San Andreas fault (specifically 1857 fort Tejon magnitude 7.9-8.0)
