Plate Boundaries Flashcards
4 layers of the earth
Inner core
Outer core
Mantle
Crust
What are the nine major world plates
Pacific plate
North American plate
South American plate
Nazca plate
Euraisian
African plate
Indian plate
Indo - Australian plate
Antarctic plate
What are the three different types of p,ate boundaries ?
Destructive (convergent)
Constructive (divergent)
Transform (conservative or passive constructive)
What is subduction
Convection happens when two plates collide forcing one plate up and the other down. The magma in the earths mantle melts and is recycled into the mantle. This is called subduction
What is a destructive plate boundary
When two plates collide forcing one up and the other down. The plate that is forced down is then recycled into the magma. Eg. The pacific ring of fire
What is a constructive plate boundary
When two plates pull apart. Magma rises cools and becomes basalt rock then new crust is formed. Eg.The mid Atlantic ridge
What is a transform plate boundary
When two plates slide past each other. Eg. The San Andreas fault line
