Plate Boundaries Flashcards
Describe the motion of a divergent plate boundary
Spreading (pulling apart)
Describe the motion of a convergent plate boundary
Colliding (subduction)
Describe the motion of a transform plate boundary
Sliding (lateral movement)
What is the effect of a divergent plate boundary?
Constructive - new land created
What is the effect of a convergent plate boundary?
Destructive - land destroyed (oceanic plate)
What is the effect of a transform plate boundary?
Conservative - land is not created or destroyed
What landforms are created at divergent boundaries?
Mid ocean ridges, volcanic islands
What landforms are created at convergent boundaries?
Fold mountains, volcanic island arcs, oceanic trenches
What landforms are created at transform boundaries?
Fault lines

Describe and explain transform plate boundaries
- A transform is a boundary that is created by the action of two tectonic plates that are sliding past each other in a sideways motion
- No new crust is created or destroyed, instead one plate slides sideways past another plate
- The line along with the plates slide is called a fault
- Although these boundaries are generally free of volcanic activity, they are associated with earthquakes
