Plate Boundaries Flashcards
About conservative plate boundaries
Example: San Andreas fault in California, when plates sliding past eachother.
Earthquakes: destructive earthquakes up to magnitude 8.5, small earth tremors almost daily
Volcanoes : no volcanoes
Divergent plate boundary
Example : Iceland on the mid-Atlantic ridge . When the plates pulling apart .
Earthquakes: small earthquakes up to 5.0-6.0 on the Richter scale.
Volcanoes: not very explosive or dangerous,
About convergent plate boundaries.
Example: Andes mountains in Peru and chile. oceanic plate is subducted under the continental plate
Earthquakes: very destructive up to magnitude 9.5, tsunami can form
Volcanoes: very explosive destructive volcanoes , steep sided cone shaped
About collision zone plate boundary
Example : Himalayas formed . continental plates push into eachother
Earthquakes: destructive earthquakes Up to magnitude 9.0 , landslides are triggered
Volcanoes: volcanoes are very rare
