plate boundaries Flashcards
fill in the gaps
The inner ……… heats the ……….. in the mantle, causing it to rise up in plumes. These plumes move through the mantle and to the ………. and have nowhere else to go, so the move sideways, cool down and sink. This pushes the ………. plates.

what is ride push?
magma rises as the plates move apart. the magma cools to form new plate material. as it cool it becomes denser and slides down away from the ridge. this causes other plates to move away from each other
what is slab pull?
the denser the plate sinks back into the mantle under the influence of gravity. it pulls the rest of the plate along behind it.

how do destructive plate boundaries work?
If an oceanic plate moved towards a
continental plate, the heavier oceanic plate
sinks beneath the continental plate, into the
mantle. This often causes ocean trenches to
form. The continental plate is forced up by
the impact and the folding and faulting forms
mountains to form. The area where the
oceanic plate sinks below the continental
plate is called a subduction zone. As it sinks,
pressure increases, which can trigger
earthquakes. As the plate melts it produces
magma, which rises towards the surface of
the continental plate, forming volcanoes.
how do collision plate margins work?
Where two continental plates collide, they
buckle, fracture and push upwards to form
high mountain belts. The pressure pushing
them together can cause severe
earthquakes, but not volcanoes.
how do constructive plate margins work?
Where two plates are forced apart, magma
rises and cools forming volcanoes and new
oceanic crust. As this builds up over time a
mid-ocean ridge is created. The movement
of the plates creates weak earthquakes.
how do conservative plate margins work?
Where two plates are forced apart, magma
rises and cools forming volcanoes and new
oceanic crust. As this builds up over time a
mid-ocean ridge is created. The movement
of the plates creates weak earthquakes.
