plate bondary Flashcards
1
Q
what are the types of plate boundaries?
A
divergent, convergent, transform
2
Q
divergent:
A
where 2 plates move apart (away from eachother)
3
Q
convergent:
A
when 2 plates move toward each other (close to eachother)
4
Q
transform:
A
where one plate slips right lateral past eachother
5
Q
Mid ocean ridges
A
- midocean ridges are geogrpahically extensive landforms on the planet.
- a continuous range of underwater volcanoes that wraps around the globe like seams on a baseball
- youngest seafloor is always found along mid-ocean ridge
-new basalt is formed at volcanoes along midocean ridges through decompression melting.
Divergent boundaries
6
Q
Decompression melting:
A
Melting hot mantle through changes in pressure.
Divergent boundary
7
Q
Rifting/rift
A
Zone where continental crust (lithosphere) is splitting apart (pulled apart)
Divergent boundary
8
Q
Rift valley:
A
Long valley with volcanoes formed by rifting.
-As rift valleys open and deepen, may flood with seawater, creating an inland sea and, with more time, a new ocean basin
