Plastics Flashcards
(37 cards)
What is the molecular structure of thermo plastic.

In a polymer chain what is one circle thing called.
A monomer
What are the 4 properties of thermoplastics
Remouldable
Recyclable
Self Coloured
Self Finishing
What symbol do all thermo plastics have
The three arrow triangle recyclable with the number in the center and a letter below representing the plastic.
How long does it take for a thermo plastic to degrade
100+ years
What plastic is Lego made of
ABS
What does ABS make
High quality toys
mobile phones
Safety helmets
What are the three main properties of ABS
Hard
strong
durable
What is the negative point of ABS
expensive
What plastic is a bottle made of
PET
What are the two good points of PET
It can be compleatly clear
and it is strong when thin
What is the bad point of PET
It has a cheap crinkly feel
What is a sandwhich box made of and why
Polypropylene because it is soft tough and supple and it can have integral hinges
What does HIPS stand for
High impact polystyrene
What does LDPE and HDPE stand for
Low Density Poly-Ethylene
and
High Density Poly-Ethylene
What is a plastic bag made of and why
LDPE because in is encredable strong when extramly thin. and it can be made 0.1mm thick
What can polystyrene be used to make.
Yogurt pots and dispoable food containers.
What is the stock forms of plastic
Sheets tubes and granules
Name the 4 additives and what they do
Platicizer=changes natural properties and makes it easyer to process
Filler=replaces polymer and reduces cost
stabilizer=stop deterioriating over time
bio batch=make thermo polymers biodegrade in less then 5 years
What is line bending
lie acrylic over simple heating element until hot and bend ovver a mould or jig.
What is drape moulding
Heat plastic to 150degrees not molten drape over simple wooden mold.
What is vacuum forming

What is injecton moulding
Heat plastic granuals
push in to mold make solid shape
What is blow moulding
Plastic tube is inserted in to mould blow high presure air into the tube to make product
