Plastics Flashcards
What are the materials in cellulose proportionate?
Proprionic acid/ cellulose chips / acetic acid / plasticiser
What are the raw materials in cellulose acetate?
Cotton linters / wood pulp / acetic acid
What are the raw materials used in cellulose nitrate frames?
Wood pulp/cotton linters/ nitric acid
What is the material percentages of carbon fiber?
60%nylon 20% carbon 20% other plastics
What is the softening temperature of cellulose nitrate?
65 degrees
What is the flashpoint of cellulose nitrate?
70 degrees
What identifies an Optyl frame?
15mm side re enforcements / Optyl logo
What are he advantages of Optyl frames?
High elasticity / lightweight / hypoallergenic
What is the advantages of nylon frames?
No joints/ lighter/ improved strength
What is Optyl made from?
Epoxy resin
What is the adjustment temp of ca?
57
What is the adjustment temp of Cn?
65 (flashpoint at 70)
What is the adjustment temp of proprionate?
67
What is the adjustment temp of pmma?
68
What is the adjustment temp of Optyl?
80-120
What is the adjustment temp of nylons and copolyamides?
Trick q they shouldn’t be heate as the have low temps and shrink when heated excessively.
What is the only thermosetting material?
Optyl and epoxied resins
What are nylon frames otherwise known as?
Polyamides
What are co Polyamides?
Polyamides can be mixtures of plastics / copolymers of different Polyamides/ copolymers of different plastics. (spx is one) some can be heated after mixing. Increasingly clear making them hard to identify.
What is a graduated colour called?
Two tone
What is the composition of Monel?
Similar to nickel silver 68% nickel / copper
How is nickel silver coloured?
Plated / coated
How are titanium frames coloured?
Ion playing/ galvanic cladding
How are aluminium frames coloured
Anodising
How are rg frames plated?
Gold applied to the wire before drawing
mechanical plating
What is electrolytic plating?
Metal is deposited by solution used when playing with gold/other metals
What is a neutral density tint?
(Grey) Does not affect colour perception
What colour tint for night driving?
Yellow amber contrast mar helps also
What colour are contrast filters?
Sodium yellow/ amber
What colour tints are used for bud and fluorescent lighting?
Blue/brown
What is achromatopsia?
A specific inability to perceive colour image is read as black and white
What tints are for achromatopsia?
Red orange amber yellow and neutral density.
What tints are suitable for night driving?
Yellow /amber mar will do it anyway
How are ac frames made?
Cut from sheet and routed. Extruded .injection moulding
What are the advantages of ca?
Soft has a hight impact resistance. Natural feel
What is pmma made of?
Acetone, sodium cyananide, methanol and sulphuric acid
How are pmma frames made?
Routing used in nylon supras
How are pmma frames coloured?
Lawyering over pale base colours
What to look out for when adjusting pmma?
Must be exactly at 68 degrees as below is brittle and above blisters
Advantages of pmma?
Rigid lightweight hard. But brittle has high lasting polish
Advantages if aluminium
Strong very rigid lightweight tarnish resistant
How would you repair aluminium?
Cannot be souldered or brazed very difficult to adjust.
How are cf and cp frames made?
Injection moulding
How are Optyl frames made?
Compression moulding
What is the difference between gold plate and gold wash
Gold wash has a thinner layer of deposited gold and no platinum seal layer
What is 12ct?
12 parts pure gold 12 parts alloy
What is the makeup of Monel?
68% nickel 29%copper 1.25%iron 1,25%manganese
What is the makeup of nickel silver?
60% copper 18% nickel 20% zinc and manganese
What is polycarbonate used for on frames?
Side shields and non rx safety shields
How are nylon frames made?
Injection moulding
What does spx stand for?
Super polyamide x (derivative of nylon)
What is there adjustment temp of polyamide?
95% but does shrink. Sides are fully reinforced to prevent this
What is stainless steel composed of?
Iron 18% chromium 8%nickel
