plasma-the fluid component Flashcards
why is blood considered a connective tissue
because it links all cells and organs in the body
what are the three blood proteins
- albumins
- globulins
- fibrinogen
what is albumins
it serves to maintain osmotic balance
what is globulins
it acts as a part of the immune response
what is fibrinogen
it helps with blood clotting
what are the cell types that make up 45% of the blood
- erythrocytes
- leukocytes
- platelets
what is erythrocytes
they are red blood cells that are designed like filled doughnuts to carry a greater surface area of oxygen
they lack nucleus so they cannot divide
what is leukocytes
they are white blood cells designed like cotton and responsible for the immune system responses
have different types
what is platelets
they are formed from cell cytoplasm designed with finger like spikes that float through blood vessels and catch on broken vessel walls
what are the function of blood
they transport and maintain a balance
what do they transport
they transport oxygen and nutrients to tissues, waste and co2 away from tissues, hormones, plasma proteins throughout the body.
how do they maintain a balance
balancing temperature by vasoconstriction/vasodilation
balance pH levels by hydrogen ion and bicarbonate balance
what is blood clotting
it maintains homeostasis by preventing blood loss
what happens right after a break in a vessel occurs
platelets burst on contact and release compounds to form a protein known as thromboplastin
what does thromboplastin react with
calcium ions to activate blood protein known as prothrombin
