Plasma Membrane Flashcards
How does the membrane maintain homeostasis
Maintains homeostasis because it is selectively permeable
Function
To control movement of substances into and out of the cell
Phospholipids
Phosphate head (hydrophilic) is water loving contains phosphate
Fatty acid tail (hydrophobic) is water fearing contains fatty acids saturated are rigid and unsaturated is flexible
Structure
Phospholipids- phosphate group is polar, two fatty acid chains are non polar
Cholesterol
Proteins
Carbohydrates
Molecules that can pass through membrane
Oxygen
Carbon dioxide
Molecules that can not pass through membrane
Water
Glucose
Cholesterol
Helps to give rigidity to strengthen membrane
Proteins
Can be in or outside membrane and carry out many functions
Protein channels
Used in diffusion
Protein pump
Used in active transport
Receptor proteins
Accepts certain molecules
Marker proteins
Where carbohydrates are attached
Carbohydrates
Help in cell recognition so the body can distinguish between foreign substances and acts like a name tag
Called glycocalyx
How it maintains structure
Dual natured polarity of phospholipids maintains structure of membrane
How is lipid bilayer held together
Polar heads (hydrophilic) are attracted to water both in and outside the cell
