Plants chapter 4 Flashcards
What is the function of the upper epidermis cells?
The upper epidermis cells contain no chloroplasts and are transparent to allow light to penetrate into the leaf
What is the function of the palisade layer cells?
The palisade layer cells are packed tightly together near the top of the leaf to collect as much sunlight as possible, they contain many chloroplasts and photosynthesis takes place in these cells
Spongy mesophyll layer
The spongy mesophyll cells contain air spaces to allow the movement of gases for ex carbon dioxide and oxygen throughout the air
Stoma
The stoma helps regulate the movement of gases into and out of the leaf
Lower epidermis
The stomata are found in the lower epidermis besides the guard cells in this layer contain no chloroplasts
Process that plants absorb water
Diffusion/osmosis
