plants and animals Flashcards
Period of rhythm
Time it takes to complete one cycle of activity. Ex. Sleep cycle is 24hr, menstruation is 30 days, coming out at high tide is 12hr
Phase shift
To change the start time of a rhythm, how much the activity or rhythm as moved forward or back. Ex. Phase shift changes in school holiday as we turn off alarm clocks - wake up later and later every day
Endogenous
Regulated internal with no environmental stimulus needed
Exogenous
Controlled by environmental stimulus
Free running period
Length of behaviour when there are no external cues. Natural period
Zeitgeber
Time signal for biological clock. Ex. Phone or opening curtains. What causes the biological clock to occur
Entrainment
Forces the free running period to follow an external pattern which resets the biological clock. Alarm resets the behaviour back to waking up at 6am daily in comparison to waking up later in the holiday
Crepuscular
Active at sunrise and sunset. Zeitgeber could be temperature or light
Diurnal
Active in day
Circa-
Behaviour is in response to the changing tides (tidal)
Can be circannaul (year) circadian (daily) or circalunar (monthly)
Arhythmic
No regular pattern
Territory
Area defended by an animal
Klinotaxis
Taxis in which the orientation depends on receptors alternately comparing the intensity of the stimulus as the body moves from side to side
Orthokinesis
Orientation response in which the strength of the stimulus determines the rate of the linear movement
Nasties
Non-directional growth response, with the instantaneous movement of water in regards to the stimulus intensity
