plants and animal cells Flashcards
what is the job of a sperm cell?
the job of a sperm cell is to join with an ovum (egg cell).
what is the process of the sperm and ovum cell joining called?
the sperm and ovum cell joining is called fertilization.
how do the sperm cells get their energy?
the sperm cells are full of mitochondria, and the mitochondria provide energy so the sperm can have energy for their swimming.
what do sperm cells contain?
sperm cells contain enzymes which allow them to digest their way through the outer layer of the ovum.
what is the job of a nerve cell?
the job of a nerve cell is to send electrical impulses around the body.
what is the axon, and what does it carry?
the axon carries the electrical impulses from one part of the body to another.
what does insulating mean?
insulating means to protect something to prevent the loss of heat and warmth.
what is at the end of the axon?
at the end of the axon there are synapses, synapses are junctions which allow the impulse to pass from one nerve cell to another.
what do muscle cells do?
muscle cells can contract (contracting is to get shorter). muscle cells contain fibres which can change their length.
what happens when a muscle cell contracts?
when a muscle cell contracts, the protein fibres shorten, decreasing the length of the cell.
what are muscle cells packed full of?
as well as sperm cells, muscle cells are packed full of mitochondria to provide energy for muscle contraction.
how are muscle tissues formed?
muscle cells work together to form muscle tissue.
