Plants Flashcards
Function of a flower is
Reproduction
Function of a leaf
Photosynthesis and transpiration
Transpiration
Cools the plant when water vapour passes through it
Photosynthesis
Makes food for the plant using light energy
Gas exchange
Allows the exchange of carbon dioxide and oxygen
Stem
The stem allows the transport of food, water and materials Around the plant.
It also supports the plant and holds it upright.
Stems store food e.g potato
Gas exchange in lenticels
Roots
Anchor and support
Take in water and nutrient
Store food e.g carrots and turnips
Xylem
Water and dissolved soil e.g minerals
Phloem
food from leaves around the plant.
Stomata
Little holes on the underside of the leaves
Transpiration stream
The flow of water from the roots, up through the plants, and out the leaves is called transpiration stream
Chlorophyll
Is the green chemicals needed for photosynthesis, it’s found in the chloroplasts of plant cells
Carbon dioxide
Enters the stomach (holes on the underside of the leaf
Photosynthesis word equation
Carbon dioxide + water —> glucose + oxygen
How are leaves designed
Flat and thin so sunlight can get through them,
Leaves have tiny holes called stomata to allow oxygen out and carbon dioxide in.
