Plants Flashcards
Chloropyll
Is a part of a plant cell that captures light and turns it into food. Its a green substance.
Glucose
A very common plant food - sugar.
Upper and lower epidermas
Thin layer that supports and protects the leaf.
Cuticle
A waxy layer that prevents water being lost from the top of the leaf.
Palisade mesophyll
The layer near the top of the leaf so that the palisade cells get plenty of light. Palisade cells contain lots of chloroplast for photosynthesis.
Spongy mesophyll
Irregularly shaped cells that provide air spaces that allows gasses to diffuse in and from the cells
Chloroplast
The place were photosynthesis takes place
Guard cells
Cells that can change shape and open or close the stomata.
Stomata
Tiny holes mainly in the lower surface of the leaf were gas exchange occurs.
Xylem
Vessels that bring water to the leaf
Pholem
Tubes that take glucose to other parts of the plant

Air spaces
This is so that gases can diffuse in and out quickly.
Photosynthesis
Is the process by witch plants make carbohydrates from raw materials of water and carbon dioxide using energy from light.
