Q

What is the formation of fruit and seeds?

A
  1. Zygote divides and embryo forms.
  2. Cotyledons form around the embryo-food store.
  3. The ovule wall hardens - seed coat.
  4. The ovary becomes the fruit.

Q

What is pollination? what are the stages? (Insect and then wind pollination)

A

Pollination: the transfer of pollen from the stamen to the stigma.
Stages: insect pollination-
1. Feeds on the nectar.
2. Pollen from stamen transfers on bee.
3. Bee flies to another flower and pollen grain sticks to the stigma.

Q

Flower structure- (insect and wind pollinated flowers)

A

Insect:

  • big, bright petals- attract insects
  • sweet scented nectar
  • stigma/anther,stamen inside of flower
  • not a lot of pollen- sticky

Wind:

  • dull, small petals
  • no nectar
  • stigma, stamen hangs outside the flower
  • lots of pollen- light weight

Q

What is fertilisation in plants? What are the stages?

A

Fertilisation- fusion of female and male gametes: to form a zygote.
Stages:
1. Pollen grain on stigma.
2. Pollen tube grows towards the ovule in ovary.
3. Pollen tube goes down the tube into the ovule.
4. Fuses with the nucleus of ovary to form:a zygote
