Plants Flashcards
What is the function of a stem?
The function of a stem is to hold the plant up and to transport nutreance
What is the function of a flower?
The function of a flower is to attract insects to reproduce
What is the function of a leaf?
The function of a leaf is to photosymphasise which creates energy for the plant to live
What is the function of a root
The function of a root is to absorb water from the ground and to anchor the plant
What is the function of the cuticle?
The cuticle is used to prevent loss of water from the leaf
What is the function of a palisade?
To photosymphasise
What is the function of the epidermis?
The epidermis is used to protect the plant and to let light through
What is the function of the spongy mesaphyl?
It allows gases to defuse
What is the function of the veins?
The veins transport water into the leaf (xylem) and glucose out (pholem) they also support the leaf
What is the chemical reaction of photosymphasis?
CO2+water—(sunlight)—>glucose+oxygen
What is the definition of osmosis?
Osmosis is when the movement of molecules from where there are lots to where there are fewer across a partially permeable membrane
Why does water get pulled from the xylem?
Water is pulled from the xylem because it needs to be replaced
How do you test a leaf for starch?
Soak the leaf in boiling water to soften it,
put the leaf in ethanol and heat it,
wash in cold water,
cover with iodine,
the leaf should go black
What does glucose contain?
Glucose contains cellulose fats and oils starch
