Plants Flashcards
Tropisms, Plant Defense, Plant Structure, Plant Tissue.
Auxin
Plant hormone that is responsible for a plants sense of direction.
Tropism
Movement towards/ away from a stimulus
Phototropism
The stimulus is light
Gravitropism
The stimulus is gravity
Thermotropism
The stimulus is temperature
Thigmotropism
The stimulus is touch
Hydrotropism
The stimulus is water
Chemotropism
The stimulus is chemicals.
Circadian rhythms
A plants idea of daylight cycles
Phenology
A plants idea of seasonal changes
Plants sense:
Presence of light, the direction of light, amount of light, angle of light, duration of light.
Physical Defense
physically deters herbivores. Ex) bark or thorns of spikes
Chemical Defense
Chemically deter herbivores. They smell/taste bad. -> deadly poisons. They can also mimic insect growth hormones. That can prevent the movement to the next stage of life or prevent reproduction.
Xylem
Roots-> leaves
Water
Because of negative pressure from the constant evaporation of water out the stomata.
Transpiration
Phloem
Leaves-> Roots
Sugars
Translocation
Vascular Plants
Plants who can move water and sugars around the plant
Dermal Tissue
Protective outer layer and prevents water loss
Epidermis
Vascular Tissue
Conductive Tissue
Xylem and Phloem
Ground Tissue
Storage of leftovers
Primary Growth
A plant who sprouts from a seed develops tissue then stops growing. Annuals
Herbaceous
Die after one season
Secondary Growth
Sprouts from a seed develops tissue then grows additional woody tissues
Leaf has:
Cuticle, waxy layer to prevent water loss, on the top, and trichomes, little hairs to prevent insects. Lower and upper epidermis. Vertically aligned Palisade cells on top Palisade Mesophyll. Spongy Mesophyll on the bottom lots of air. Fairly round. Stomata on the bottom with guard cells.
