plant tissues Flashcards
xylem
(dead) made of lignified cells, found in vascular bundle and transports water and nutrients around the plant
phloem
(living) made of cells , found in vascular bundle and transports food away from the leaves
epidermis
upper - 1 cell thick, found under cuticle and provides protection and transparent allowing for sunlight to enter chloroplasts
lower - 1 cell thick, found at the bottom of the plant, and contains guard cells (and stomata) for controlled transpiration
mesophyll
palisade - found under epidermis, packed vertically to fit more space and contains chloroplasts for photosynthesis
spongy - very loosely packed, allowing for gaseous exchanges and transpiration to occur (does contain very few chloroplasts)
cuticle
waxy, transparent layer found at the top of the leave. it is meant for retaining water, and protecting the leaf as well as allowing for photosynthesis to occur
stoma
gaps in the underside of the leaf allowing for transpiration surrounded by guard cells
guard cells
large vacuole containing cells that allow for the stoma to open and close at day and night
root hair
allows for osmosis to transport nutrients in water into the root, to travel up the xylem with adhesion and cohesion
epidermis
trichomes - adapted epidermal cells on the leaf
