Plant Tissues Flashcards
What are the essential uses of plants?
-source of food
-clothing textile
-medicine
-bio-fuels
-Furniture material
What are the main roles/functions of plants?
-take up water and minerals (growth and development)
-store food and nutrients
-provide means or reproduction
Groups of similar cells with common function
Plant tissues
Organs that allow plant to live and grow
Vegetative Organs
Anchors the plant to the soil for support
Roots
Maintain Axis of Plant together with branches
Stem
Two main types of tissues
Meristematic Tissues
Permanent Tissues
-A plant can grow because of these
-They are mad up of embryonic tissues called meristematic tissues
Meristems
Undergo cell division called ______
MITOSIS
found in the tip of the stems or roots
Apical Meristematic
“Secondary meristems” or “lateral buds”
Found on nodes of the stems and involved in the formation of branches
Lateral Meristems
-Cover and protect the surface of plant organs
-Cells are usually flattened with their top and bottom surfaces parallel
Surface tissues (protect)
The epidermis is layered with cuticle
Cutin
Another example of surface tissue that covers the outer surface of the bark or woody stems
CORK
-from the main bulk of plants
-Production and storage of food and serves as support for the plant.
Fundamental Tissues (fill)
large thin-walled and usually have large vacuoles.
Parenchyma Cells
-they have thicker cell wall
-they are in the stems as part of vascular bundles just beneath the epidermis
Collenchyma cells
They have thick secondary cell wall in addition to the primary cell wall
Sclerenchyma Cells
two types of sclerenchyma cells
FIbers and Sclereids
Complex conducting tissues that extend from the roots to the leaves of the plants
Vascular Tissues (transport)
Transport water and minerals from roots to the leaves via the stem
Xylem
Transport organic nutrient in both direction along the length of the plant
Phloem
