Q

why do plants need a transport system?

A
  1. every cell needs a regular supply of oxygen, water and nutrients.
  2. need to take substances in and return waste to environment.
  3. to move sugars from the leaves to the rest of the plant

Q

what are dictotyledonous plants?

A

those that have two seed leaves (have 2 cotyledons which are organs that act as food sources for embryo)
vascular tissue is distributed throughput the plant- the xylem and phloem are found together in vascular bundles which may contain other types of tissue (such as collenchyma and sclerenchyma) that give bundle strength

Q

describe the vascular bundle in the roots

A
  • xylem vessels are arranged in an X shape
  • phloem is found in between the arms of the X-shaped tissue
  • this arranged provides strength to withstand the pulling forces to which roots are exposed to
  • xylem shape is surrounded by endodermis, which supplies xylem with water

Q

describe vascular bundle in the stem

A
  • found near outer edge
  • xylem is found towards the inside of the vascular bundle to provide flexibility to the stem
  • phloem is found towards the outside
  • there is a layer of cambium between xylem and phloem which is made of meristem cells which can differentiate into xylem or phloem

Q

describe vascular tissue in the leaf

A
  • in the midrib and veins of a leaf
  • dictotyledonous leaves have a network of veins that get smaller as they spread away from midrib
  • xylem is above the phloem

Q

function of xylem vessels

A

transport water and mineral ions from roots to leaves to other parts of the plant and also provide structural support

Q

adaptations of guard cells

A
  • inner cell wall is thicker so cell curves causing stomata to open
