Plant Tissues Flashcards
What are the two types of plant tissues?
- Meristematic
- Permanent
Characteristics of meristematic tissues:
- Always dividing by mitosis.
- Apical cells found at the tips of stems + roots.
- Lateral meristems found at the sides of stems + roots.
Characteristics of permanent tissues.
- Do not actively divide.
- Specialized cells.
- Perform specific functions.
- Found throughout the plant.
Give three examples of simple permanent plant tissues.
- Collenchyma
- Parenchyma
- Sclerenchyma
Give three example of complex permanent plant tissues.
- Epidermis
- Phloem
- Xylem
What is the function of the Parenchyma?
- Store food + water.
- Intercellular spaces allow gases + water to pass through.
What is the function of the Sclerenchyma?
- To provide mechanical/strength support. (in older stems + leaves)
- Collenchyma is the opposite.
What is the function of epidermal tissue?
- Protect inner tissues.
- Cuticle prevents water loss. (by evaporation and protect against infection by pathogens)
What is the function of the Stomata?
- To let oxygen + carbon dioxide enter and exit the plant on leaves.
- Lenticels for oxygen + carbon dioxide to enter and exit on stems.
*transpire
What is the function of the epidermal roots? (epidermal cell)
-The root hairs increase surface area to improve water absorption from the soil.
