Plant Systems Flashcards
What are the cell walls of Xylem made from?
A hard substance called Lignin
What is a Xylem Tissue?
Xylem tissues are one of the two types of tissues that provide structural support for a plant. It is a conducting tissue and it is joined end to end to for hollow tubes through which the plant can transport water
What does a plants Internal System do?
Give some Examples
They are required to carry out activities within the plant, examples include:
- Obtaining Gases from Atmosphere
- Obtaining Nutrients from surroundings
- Removing Waste
- Responding to Internal and External Environmental Changes
What is Tropism?
The growth response either towards or away from a stimulus
What is a Stimulus?
A thing or event that evokes a specific functional reaction in an organ or tissue.
What is Phototropism?
A plants response to Light
What is Chemotropism?
A plants response to Chemicals
What is Thermotropism?
A plants response to Cold weather
What is Heliotropism?
A plants response to Sunlight
What is Geotropism?
A plants response to gravity
What is Thigmotropism ?
A plants response to Touch
What is Hydrotropism?
A plants response to Water
What is Stereotropism?
A plants response to Contact
What controls a plants response to stimuli?
Hormones called Auxins
What is the process called through which plants make their own food?
Photosynthesis
What is the word equation for photosynthesis?
Carbon Dioxide + Water + Sunlight = Glucose + Oxygen
Write the symbolic equation for Photosynthesis
6CO2 + 6H2O > C6H12O6 + 6O2
Why are plant leaves green?
Due to Chlorophyll
What does Chlorophyll do?
It absorbs energy from the sunlight
What is the plants transport system called?
Vascular System
What is the Vascular System made up of?
Two types of tissues, the xylem and the phloem
What does the Xylem tissues do?
Carries water and minerals to all cells in the plant from the roots.
What does a Phloem tissue do?
Carries nutrients from the cells in the leaves to other parts of the plants
What is it called when xylem and phloem are bundled together?
Vascular Bundles
What are Vascular Bundle separated by?
A layer of Cambium Cells
What are Cambium Cells able to do?
They are able to become new xylem and phloem when needed
What are the small holes in leaves called?
Stomata
What is the water loss through stomata called?
Transpiration
What is the process of the transfer of water in a plant called?
Osmosis
What to leaves do?
Make Sugar and Starch
Allow gas exchange
Transpire or give off water
What do flowers do?
Produce seeds
What do seeds do?
Grow into plants
What do stems do?
Conduct sugar and water
Display leaves for photosynthesis
Transpire or give off water
What do roots do?
Anchor plants
Absorb water
Conduct water up and sugars down
