plant revision Flashcards
revise plants
What do the sepals do?
They protect the unopened flower.
What do petals do for some plants?
They are brightly coloured to attract insects.
Is the stamen male or female?
Male.
What two parts make up the stamen?
The anther, held up by the filament.
What do the anthers produce?
The male sex cells (pollen grains).
What are the three features of the female parts?
The stigma, style and ovaries.
What is the female reproductive system called?
The carpel.
What do the ovaries contain?
The ovaries contain the ovules which are the eggs.
What are the two types of plant reproduction?
Asexual and sexual
What is asexual reproduction?
Where the plant makes a plant with the same genes without fertilization from another plant.
What is sexual reproduction?
When the plant reproduces using pollen from a different plant to fertilize their egg.
What are the two ways pollen can be spread from plant to plant?
By wind and by insects.
What are the qualities of pollen carried by insects?
It is large and rough so it can stick to the insect.
What are qualities of pollen carried by wind?
It is small and smooth so it can be picked up easily and it won’t stick to anything on its way.
What is pollination?
Pollination is where pollen is transferred from the anther of one plan to the stigma of another.
What is fertilisation?
Fertilisation is when the the pollen fuses with the egg cell by growing a pollen tube.
What is fruit development?
Fruit development is where the ovule develops into a hard seed which is then surrounded by a soft fruit produced by the ovary.
What is germination?
Germination is when the seed begins to grow, provided it has the right resources.
What is growth?
Growth is where the seed begins to grow into a mature plant and it will continue to do this throughout it’s life.
