Plant Reproduction Flashcards
What is the female part of the plant called?
Carpel
What is the male part of the plant called
Stamen
What part of the flower holds the pollen?
Anther
Name the male parts of the plant
Anther, filament
Name the female parts of the plant
Stigma, style, ovary
What is the process of pollination
Pollination is the process where pollen is transferred from one flower to another
What carries the pollen?
Vectors - i.e. bees, insects and some birds
What lures the vectors?
The flowers lure the vectors by making nectar to attract them with brightly coloured petals and scents
What is nectar
Nectar is sugary food made by the flowers to attract vectors.
What is the first step in the process of pollination?
A pollen grain grows a pollen tube down the style and into the ovary.
What happens in the second step of pollination after the pollen tube grows?
The tube grows into an ovule (egg). The nucleus from the pollen grain travels down the tube.
How does plant fertilisation occur
Fertilisation occurs when the two nuclei fuse and a seed is formed.
Where are female gametes formed in the flower?
Ovaries
Where are pollen grains produced in the flower?
Anthers
Where do pollen grains land during pollination?
Stigmas
