Plant Reproduction Flashcards
Male and Female part of the flower
Male- Stamen(Anther and Filament)
Female- Pistil(stigma, style and ovule)
The Anther
Pollen grains which contain the mail gamete are formed in the anther. The anther contains 4 compartments known as pollen sacs. The outer layer of the pollen sac, the endothecium, is a fibrous layer that aids in pollen dispersal when they ripen. The innermost layer is the tapetum which provides nutrients to the developing pollen grain.
In the middle of each cell there are pollen mother cells that divide by meiosis to produce four haploid cells. Each haploid cell develops an outer protective layer which is now called a pollen grain. The outer layer of which has 2 layers called the exine and intine.
When the pollen grains are mature, the anthers split open at stomium in a process called dehiscence to expose the pollen.
