PLANT REPRODUCTION Flashcards
What is sexual reproduction?
When two organisms have intercourse (male + female)
What is asexual reproduction?
When an organism is able to reproduce on its own.
What does the stamen consist of?
The filament and anther
What does the carpel consist of?
The stigma, ovary and style
What is pollination?
The transfer of pollen from the anther of one flower to the stigma of another.
Name 6 features of animal pollination…
- bright petals
- scented
- contains nectary
- sticky stigma
- anthers positioned to rub against animal
- pollen grains have barbs
Name 6 features of wind pollination…
- dull petals
- no scent
- no nectary
- feathered stigma to catch pollen
- exposed pollen
- light and small pollen in large quantities
What colour does hydrogen carbonate indicator turn in high CO2 concentration?
yellow
What colour does hydrogen carbonate indicator turn in low CO2 concentration?
purple
what are four methods of seed dispersal?
- wind
- animal
- mechanical
- water
What part of the flower turns into the seed?
Ovule
Why are seeds dispersed far away from the parent plant?
To minimise competition with parent plant.
What is seed dormancy?
When the seed runs out of water and therefore metabolic reactions stop.
Why is water needed for germination?
To soften/crack the testa and to activate enzymes to break down food store.
Explain the break down of the food store in germinating seeds.
starch –(amylase)–> maltose
maltose –(maltase)–> glucose
