Plant Parts Flashcards
Stem Cells
Cells that are unspecialized and can potentially become many different types of cells
Meristems
Stem cell clusters
Where are Apical Meristems and what do they do?
At the tip of every stem and root. They produce materials needed to build new body parts.
What do Lateral Meristems do?
Allow roots and stems to thicken while the plant grows
Function of the Stem
Provide structure for the plant, and hold leaves up to the light.
Function of the Leaves
Perform photosynthesis
Phyllotaxy
The pattern in which leaves grow on a stem
Function of the Roots
Absorbing nutrients and anchoring the plant to the soil
Epidermis
The outermost layer of tissue
What does the vascular tissue of the roots do?
Transports nutrients up to stem and leaves
How do roots interact with other organisms?
They act as a place to store food or can provide shelter for helpful organisms. Can also exchange nutrients with fungi underground.
How can you easily spot roots as to not confuse them with stems?
Look for phyllotaxy, roots should not have any. If it does, it’s a stem.
What are vegetables?
Vegetable isn’t a botanical term, it can generally describe edible plants.
Vegetative Plant Organs
Refers to a type of plant organ that contributes to a plant’s overall growth and structure
Fruit
A mature, ripened ovary containing seeds
