Plant Morphology Flashcards
Extirpated
No longer surviving in native area, but surviving elsewhere.
Floccose
Being covered in wooly hairs easily rubbed off.
Jugate
Arranged in pairs
Macrophyll
Large leaves produced by ferns and seed plants.
Haustorial Root
Parasitic root that invades stem of another plant to siphon nutrients instead of the soil.
Globose
Round or spherical in shape
Fenestrated
Thinned or with small slots as to be translucent.
Epiphytic
Non-parasitic plants that grow on the canopy of larger plants and do not root in soil.
Adventitious
Organs growing of a plant in areas they normally shouldn’t, such as a root growing from the mid stem.
Abscission
Normal sheddings of an organ that is aged or mature.
Sympodial
When lateral shoot growth takes over after the termination of the apical meristem.
Runcinated
Leaves that have jagged edges pointing back towards the base of the plant. Think of dandelion leaves.
Sporophyll
Leaf or bract that bears sporangia in fern allies, ferns, and gymnosperms
Trullate
Spade shaped leaves where thickest part is closest to main stem.
Stipule
Outgrowth of leaf base connected to the shoot
Marcescent
Withering organs (leaves/petals/stipules) that are still persistent. Think of the brown leaves that remain on trees in January.
Latex
White milky substance inside of some stems
Erubescent
Reddish in color, blushing
Eophyll
First fully expanded leaves produced by a seedling.
Lignotuber
Woody swelling of the root crown to protect from fire damage.
Archeophyte
Non native plant that has been established in an area for a length of time.
Neophyte
Species that has newly been introduced to an area.
Halophyte
Salt loving plants. Includes ocean plants.
Helophyte
Marsh plants that grow partially submerged in water that regrow from buds below the water’s surface.
Mesophyte
Plants that use an average amount of water.
Myrmecophyte
Plants that have a mutualistic relationship with ants.
Nyctagimous
Flowers that open at night. Referring only to flowers, hit the plant itself.
Nyctanthous
Plants that bloom at night
Pteridophyte
Vascular plants that reproduce using spores. Ferns and fern allies.
Semelparous
Producing flowers only once, and then dying.
Stenophyllous
Plants having narrow leaves.
Tracheophyte
Plants having a true vascular system including xylem and phloem
Xerophyte
Plants that live in dry conditions.
Saponaceous
Having the qualities of soap
Napiform
Round at the op and tapering at the bottom. Turnip shaped. Usually refers to roots.
