Plant - Lesson 1 Flashcards
What is the process plants use to make glucose?
Photosynthesis
What is photosynthesis?
Photosynthesis by which plants take carbon dioxide and convert it into glucose and oxygen.
How many carbon molecules are taken in in photosynthesis?
6 carbon molecules.
What is the other input/reactant that completes this conversion process?
WATER!! H2O!
Oxygen needs to be removed from the carbons in order to be converted into a molecule useful for a living organism.
There is only one process that can make this happen. What is it?
Through photosynthesis!
Where does photosynthesis occur?
In the chloroplast
What is chlorophyll?
They are the pigments that absorb light
In what way is energy stored in a plant?
In the form of starch.
What type of macromolecule is starch?
A carbohydrate
What are three things we discussed that the glucose in plants can be used for?
- Cell respiration
- It can make other organic molecules
- Excess glucose will go to starch
What are the 7 levels of taxonomic organization?
(Dear King Philip Came Over For Good Soup)
Domain
Kingdom
Phyla
Class
Order
Family
Genus
Species
What are the 3 primary organs of a plant?
Leaf, root, stem
What type of growth do leaves exhibit and what does that mean for this organ?
Leave have determinate growth which means they have a final size. So, when it is reached, they stop growing.
Name the two parts of a leaf:
Blade
Petiole
What does the petiole do?
It connects the blade to the stem
How many auxiliary buds does a compound leaf have?
Trick question!
A compound leaf has 1 auxiliary buds and multiple leaflets/blades.
