PLANT LEAF Flashcards
1
Q
Leaf
Key Functions
Physiology
A
Provides the platform for photosynthesis and therefore exposes as many chloroplasts to the sunlight as possible. Stomates facilitate the process through gas exchange.
Typical leaf comprises the leaf blade (lamina), petiole, & leaf axial. Coated with epidermal cells on both sides that contain cutin and may contain trichomes.

Q
Guard Cells
A
Regulate the opening and closing of stomata.
When the cell is turgid, one side will shrink, resulting in the stomatal opening.
When a guard cell is dehydrated (lacking H20) however, it returns to a flattened shape and the stomata closes.
