Plant Hormones Flashcards
What is auxin and what does it control?
A plant hormone that controls growth in response to light, gravity and moisture
Where is the auxin made?
In the tips of shoots and roots
Where does auxin move in the tip?
It moves backwards to make the cells just behind the tip grow longer
What may happen in the tip of a shoot is removed?
no auxin is made and the shoot may stop growing
Where does auxin slow down?
Slows growth in the root
What does the shoot grow towards and how does it benefit?
Shoots grow towards light as more auxins build up, cells grow faster on the shaded side so the shoot bends towards the light
What do shoots grow away from and how does it benefit?
Shoots grow away from gravity, more auxin builds up on the lower side of the tip, lower side grows faster bending the shoot upwards
Roots grow towards?
And why?
Gravity-more auxin in the lower side, auxin sled growth meaning cells on top grow faster and root bends downwards
Moisture- more auxin builds on side that has more moisture, slows Growth in that side cause in root to bend towards the moisture
How do plants have uses in agriculture?
- Weedkillers-have hormones to kill broad-leaves plants like weeds, narrow leaved crops aren’t harmed
- Rooting hormones- plant cuttings don’t always grow in soil, if rooting powder with auxin in helps the roots grow
What do roots grow towards?
Gravity and moisture
