Plant Growth Regulators Flashcards
Why and What?
Plants are sessile, so body shape is able to change in order to adapt to environment –>
Do this with plant growth regulators: chemicals that signal plant cells to undergo changes
Tropisms
Directional change in growth or movement, in response to a stimulus
Types of Tropisms
A plants growth in response to . . .
1. Light (typically towards) - phototropism
2. Gravity - gravitropism
3. Touch - thigmotropism
4. Availability of water - hydrotropism
Auxins
Plant hormones that promote cell elongation –> helps with bending
Gibberellins
Plant hormones that promote cell division and fruit production –> farmers can use to make fruit larger and more appealing
Ethylene Gas
“Stress hormone” that helps protect plant against environmental stress –> released as fruit ripens, causing further ripening (food producers can add or absorb ethylene to quicken or prevent ripening)
