What does the physical defence on a plant’s leaf/stem do?
The waxy cuticle stops pathogens entering, and stops pests from damaging them. Stops water collected on the leaf.
What are plant cells surrounded by?
A cell wall made of cellulose.
What does the cell wall do?
Stops pathogens that made it past the waxy cuticle.
What do a plant’s chemical defences do?
Prevent damage from pests and pathogens.
What is an antiseptic?
A chemical produced by plants which kills bacterial and fungal pathogens.
What is an example of a plant which produces anti-bacterial substances?
A mint plant.
What is an example of a plant which produces anti-fungal substances?
Spearmint, which produces natural fungicide.
What is an example of a plant which produces poison?
Nightshade, to deter herbivores.
