Plant Cells Tissues & Vegetative Organs Flashcards
Cell wall
Outer layer of the plant cell, gives support and structure, barrier between cell and environment, not totally sealed
Cell membrane
Thin layer of protein and fat inside the cell wall
Nulceus
Contains DNA organised in Chromosomes- control centre of cell
Vacuole
Vacuole is a membrane bound organelle. storage in cells for water, nutrients and sometimes waste. Maintain turgid within the cell
Cytoplasm
Contains most of the organelles and many dissolved minerals in its jelly like matrix
Chloroplasts
Organelles found only in green plants. Site of photosynthesis, contains it’s own DNA. Contain green pigment called chlorophyll converts sunlight energy to glucose. Larger than mitochondria
Mitochondria
Site of respiration, contains it’s own DNA
Plant tissue
A combination of cells which make up a structure to carry out a particular function
Mitosis
Process of cell division which results in the replication of cells
Parenchyma
Thin walled undifferentiated cells - not specialised for any particular purpose.
Main purpose - packing
Can divide to create new cells
Can specialise to create new plants
Perform virtually all metabolic activities of plant cells
Organelle
Cellular structure performing a specific function eg chloroplast
Endoplasmic reticulum
Proteins are made in this wavy sheet like area
Collenchyma
Main function to provide support for plant body
Schlerenchyma
Strength and support to parts that have stopped growing. Dead at maturity
Xylem
Principal water and nutrients conducting tissues in vascular plants
Die once fully grown, contents disintegrate leaving strong hollow water conducting pipeline
