Plant Cells Flashcards
What are chloroplasts
Chloroplasts are sites of photosynthesis.
Has membrane on inside which forms stacks (sites of photosynthesis).
Has own ribosomes and their own DNA.
Amyloplasts
Amyloplasts are storage vacuoles in cytoplasm. Contain starch and have double membrane on outside.
Cell wall
Cell wall is membrane of cell that forms external to cell membrane
Role of cell wall
Role of cell wall is to give cell rigidity, strength and protection against mechanical stress.
Vacuole
Vacuole is a membrane bound vesicle in cytoplasm.
Involved in storage and support.
When cell takes up water (turgid), vacuole keeps plant stable
Functions of vacuole
Functions of vacuole include: intracellular secretion (synthesizing and releasing substances from interior of cell to exterior), excretion, storage and digestion.
Tonoplast
Tonoplasts are cytoplasmic membrane surrounding vacuole, separating vascular contents from cytoplasm
Plasmodesmata
Plasmodesmata is a microscopic channel of plants facilitating transport and communication between individual cells. The cells are connected by strands of cytoplasm
Middle lamella
Middle lamella is region found between cell walls of adjacent cells. Has pectin
Pits
Pits are places where cell wall is thin, so only 1 layer of cellulose is deposited. Pits are pores going through cell wall. Only found in plant cells. Allow exchange of material between plant cells
