Plant Cell Flashcards
Cell Wall
Ridged outermost layer of plant cell.
Cell Membrane
Protective layer made of complex lipids and proteins.
Cytoplasm
Thick water based solution which organelles are found. Salts, nutrients, minerals and enzymes are dissolved in the cytoplasm.
Nucleus
Control center of the cell. Contains DNA
Ribosomes
Little round structures that produce proteins. Found in cytoplasm or attached to the ER
Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER)
membrane system of folded sacs and tunnels. Helps move proteins within the cell as well as export them outside the cell.
What are the two types of ER?
Smooth and Rough
Golgi body
stack of membrane-covered sacs that prepares proteins for export from the cell.
Mitochondria
“Powerhouse” of the cell converts the energy store in foos into energy-rich molecules that the cell can use.
Vacuoles
large membrane-enclosed compartments that store toxic wastes as well as useful products such as water.
Chloroplast
contains green pigment that traps sunlight and converts it into sugars via photosynthesis.
List 3 reasons plant cells are unique.
- Plant cells have a cell wall
- Plant cells contain vacuoles
- Plant cells contain chloroplasts
Eukaryote
Organisms composed of one or more cells containing nuclei and organelles.
Carbon Sequestration
The natural removal of carbon from the atmosphere by the soil and plants.
Biofortified
Breeding crops to increase their nutritional value
