Plant Biology Flashcards
Propagation
Process of producing new plants by seeds, cutting or other techniques.
Vascular System
System which transports water and nutrients throughout the plant.
Germination
the sprouting and growing of a plant from seeds.
Osmosis
Diffusion of water molecules from a place of higher concentration to a lower concentration through a semi-permeable membrane.
Chloroplast
Specialized organelle which contains chlorophyll
Cytoplasm
semi-fluid substance of a cell which contains all contents outside of the nucleus.
Chlorophyll
green pigment which captures light energy in plants; located on chloroplasts.
Denaturation
the alteration of a protein shape through some form of external stress.
Mycorrhizae
fungus which forms a mutualistic relationship with the roots of plants to allow better absorption in the roots.
Endodermis
Signal layer of the cell which regulates the flow of water between the central stele of roots from the outer layer
Xylem
Primarily transports water from the roots to the leaves; dead part of the vascular system
Sieve Tube
located on the phloem; transports sucrose and other dissolved solids around the plant
Photosynthate
Chemical compound which is a product of photosynthesis.
Stomata
Pores located on the epidermis of the leaf which reduces water losses to a minimum and is regulated through the action of guard cells
Glucose
a simple sugar formed during photosynthesis to provide food for the plant
