Plant + animal disease Flashcards
(8 cards)
Why are plant diseases harmful?
Crop fail -> people suffer
Starve/economies struggle -> loss of jobs
Threaten entire species
Examples of plant diseases:
Ring rot: bacterial disease (potatoes, tomatoe)
โ> gram positive bacteria
Damages leaves, -> destroy 80% crop
TMV: virus 150 species, damages leaves + stunts growth
Potatoe blight: protocist โ> hyphae penetrate host cell
Black sigatoka: fungus, hyphae turn bana leaf black
Why are animal disease harmful?
Affect health, wellbeing, national economies
Examples of animal bacterial disease:
TB: destroy lung tissue + supress immune system โ> body less able to fight off disease.
Bacterial meningitis: infection on membrane of brain โ> can cause blood poisoning โ> blotchy red/purple rash.
โ> vaccines
Examples of viral animal diseases:
HIV/AIDS
Target T-Helper cells in immune system. Passed around via body fluids
โ> antiretroviral drugs slow progress of disease.
Influenza: infection of ciliated epithelial cells in gas exchange systems.
Leaves airways open to secondary infection
Examples of protoctist diseases
Malaria: spead by bite of infected mosquitoes. Invades RBC, liver + brain.
โ> No cure: destroyed by insecticides
Examples of fungal diseases:
Ring worm: causes grey-white crusty infection circular areas of skin
โ> anitfungal creams sued to heal
Athleteโs foot: grows+digests on moist skin between toes.โ> causes cracking + scaling โ> itchy + sore
How can pathogens be identified?
Cultured in lab + identified using microscope.
Monocloncal antibodies: used to identify pathogenic organisms in plants+animals
DNA sequencing -> pathogens identified precisely to single mutation
