Plant And Soil Science Flashcards
Define plant
Living organism such as trees, shrubs, grasses, typically growing in a permanent site, absorbs water and inorganic substances through its roots, and synthesises nutrients in its leaves by photosynthesis with the green pigment chlorophyll.
What are roots for
Anchorage, uptake of water and minerals, storage of food, propagation.
What is the stem for
Support, transport, secondary growth
What are seeds for
Dormant embryos and food storage
What is the petiole?
Leaf stalk that connects leaf to stem
Cuticle
Waxy substance that covers leaves and stem. Waterproof and keeps water in plant.
Epidermis
Single layer of cells under cuticle.
Palisade mesophyll
The long cells under epidermis. Primary site of photosynthesis due to chlorophyll.
Spongy mesophyll
Round cells the contain air and chloroplast.
Vascular bundle
Also called veins. In spongy mesophyll layer. Contains xylem and phloem.
