Plant And Animal Tissues Flashcards
What are tissues?
A group of similar cells performing a specific function.
What are the 2 types of plant tissues?
Meristematic and Permanent
Where are lateral and apical meristematic tissues found?
lateral: below bark for growth in dia of stem.
apical: at tips of roots and stem and young leaves near stem tips and tips of axillary buds.
what are characteristics of meristematic tissue?
thin cell wall, small and cubical, large nucleus, no vacuole, no cell space, actively dividing.
What are the characteristics of permanent tissue?
cells do not divide, take a permanent shape for a function.
What are the characteristics of permanent protective tissue?
thick cell wall, on surface of roots stems and leaves
What are examples of protective permanent tissue?
epidermis of leaf, cork cells of bark
What are the 3 types of supportive tissue?
Parenchyma, Sclerenchyma, Collenchyma
What are the characteristics of collenchyma?
cell wall thickens at corners, cells are elongated
what is the location and function of collenchyma?
in leaf stalks, below leaf epidermis
supports parts of plant.
What are the characteristics of Sclerenchyma?
very thick cell wall due to deposited lignin
long, narrow, dead cells
what is the location and function of Sclerenchyma?
in stems and veins of leaves
providing strength
What are the characteristics of Parenchyma?
large, thin walled, cells
oval circular or polygonal in shape, large vacuole present
What is the location and function of Parenchyma?
it stores food and provides temporary support to plant.
it is found in soft parts of the plant.
What are the 2 types of supportive tissues?
Xylem, Phloem
What are the characteristics of Xylem?
thick walled tubular cells
what is the function of xylem?
upward movement of water and minerals
old xylem forms food
what are the characteristics and function of xylem trachieds?
elongated dead cells having large cavities, cells form long tube, highly lignified cell wall
provide mechanical support
