PLANNING AND CONDUCT OF ADVANCE Flashcards
The appreciation and decision on Grouping and Tactics would generally be on fol concepts:
- To establish contact and destroy en forces.
- To adv and clear the en from area specified.
Appreciation of a Cdr
The cdr would consider following in his Appreciation:[GATE CODE F]
1. Ground[GET]/[CLEAP]
2. Assessment of Tasks[LT 4W]
3. Time and space
4. Enemy
5. Courses
6. Offensive Air Support
7. Deception
8. Engineer Plan
9. Fire support plan
Ground [GET]/[CLEAP]
Close and detailed study of maps, air photos and intelligence reports will help to identify the obstacles, defiles and ground likely to be defended.
Sources of ground info are: [GET]
1. Going reports.
2. Engineer intelligence on bridges, obstacle, logistic facilities airfields, and airstrips.
3. Town plan.
From the study of the ground a Cdr will arrive at the deduction on: [CLEAP]
1. Changes of grouping
2. Likely rate of Adv (ROA)
3. En en-route, Strength and weakness of likely en posn
4. Any specific action requireddealing with specific defile e.g. an airmobile op.
5. Possible routes.
Grnd and En consideration does not separate definitively, they are closely interrelated.
Assessment of Tasks
The Cdrs’ Initial Appre must consider: [LT 4W]
- Levels at which Reserves must be held in order to:MRE
a. Maintain the momentum by day/ni.
b. Reinforce a quick attack beyond the capability of leading elements
c. Exploit and mop up - The ratio of Infantry to Armor in the leading element
- Whether to Adv on a Broad or Narrow front. This will be influenced by: MET GO
a. Msn
b. En
c. Time and space
d. Ground
e. Own situation - What str of en can be safely bypassed at various levels.
- What Fire Sp must be decentralized to sp the leading elements.
- What additional resources in terms of the troops or logistics are needed?
Enemy
As much info as possible must be obtained about; the en, his strength, known disposition, his intentions, likely reactions and his morale
Time and Space
Aspects to be considered during the Cdrs’Appre on Time and Space are:
- Timings for various phases of Adv ops.
- Time by which task is to be completed.
- Any restriction on time factor.
- Action necessary to speed up the adv.
- When and where the en is likely to be encountered and what delay in terms of time.
Courses
In general courses for a main Advfall into two categories:
- Broad Front.
- Narrow Front.
Offensive Air Sp includes:
- Air Reconnaissance
- Close Air Support (CAS)
Deception
Factors which help to achieve surprise/deception are: [DACUU]
- Deep penetration by armored forces
- A diversion from the chosen axis backed by extensive air support and a radio deception plan
- ‘coup de main’ forces to capture or destroy bridge or defiles
- Use of night or bad weather
- Use of unlikely axis through difficult going
Engineer Plan
An engr party should be grouped with the leading elm, so that rqr info can quickly be made avail to engrcdr.
Fire Sp Plan
- Arty
- Mortars
- Observation
Planning Considerations
The Cdr has to consider the following while making his plan during Adv:[METST PWSRA]
- Msn
- En [DSP CL]
- Trn[Main TLP]
- Surprise[2C ASSURE]
- Time and Space
- Place and conduct of Battle
- Weather
- Security
- Resources
- Air Sp
Enemy: [DSP CL]
- Disposn
- Strength
- Probable intentions
- Composition
- Likely COA
Surprise: [2C ASSURE]
- Carryout Advance with utmost Speed
- Coup de main forces to capture bridges and defiles in depth
- Air and ground recce as forward as possible
- Simulate move of force backed by extensive air support and radio deception plan
- Switching of forces on alternative axes
- Use of adverse weather condition and night
- Raids on en HQs and gun areas
- ECM and ECCM technology
