What is TSM?
Tableau Services Manager (TSM) is used to manage server level configurations of Tableau Server. It is available with a command-line interface or a web interface.
Tasks performed with TSM include:
- Initial configuration of Tableau Server after installation
- Ongoing configuration management, including editing settings and changing the server topology
- Running administrative tasks such as backup, restore, ziplogs, and more
What tools does TSM replace from earlier versions of Tableau?
- Tableau Server Configuration utility
- tabadmin command-line utility
- Tableau Server Monitor
These legacy tools are often referred to as “tabadmin”
What feature and functionality are available only in the TSM command line and not the web UI?
- Preferred active repository - set the preferred node for the active repository
- Data cache configuration - set the number of minutes data should be cached
- Initial install-only settings - change the gateway port and install samples. *you can do this through the install UI but can only change them through TSM
- Initial SQL - configure server to ignore initial SQL statements
- Site SAML - core SAML is available through the TSM web UI, but you must use TSM CLI for site SAML configuration
- SAP HANA SSO - configure server for SAP HANA SSO

With TSM, can you change the hostname after Tableau Server has been installed?
No. With TSM you cannot change the hostname after Tableau Server has been installed.
Does generating archive log snapshots require administrative privileges?
Yes. In the legacy tabadmin versions of Tableau Server, site admins could generate archive log snapshots from the Tableau Server Admin Pages. In the TSM version of Tableau Server, the log snapshot functionality is restricted to administrators with TSM access. The account running TSM web UI or CLI must be a member of the local administrators group on the Windows computer running Tableau Server.
Does setup configure the Windows Firewall?
Setup no longer attempts to configure the Windows Firewall. Before you install Tableau Server, verify that the appropriate ports are open on the local firewall.
Does TSM require authentication?
Yes. Whether you’re using the Web UI or CLI, you must sign in to TSM.
Sign in through the WEB UI at https://<tsm_computer>:8850</tsm_computer>
Through the CLI, use: tsm login
