Planets Flashcards
What orbits around the sun?
All eight planets and five dwarf planets orbit around the sun
Where do the orbits lie?
Whilst orbits of the eight planets lie within the ecliptic plane, those dwarf planets are tilted relative to it
What describes planets orbital properties?
Kepler’s three laws of planetary motion described the planets orbital properties
What do the laws apply to?
Applies to other solar systems, moons, planets, dwarf planets and asteroids as well as satellites
What is the first law?
Law of Ellipses
What is the law of ellipses?
Each planet orbits the Sun in an elliptical path. The shape of the ellipse is determined by its eccentricity, which measures how elongated or circular the ellipse is. The closer the eccentricity is to zero, the more circular the orbit becomes, while an eccentricity close to one indicates a highly elongated ellipse
What is the second law?
Law of equal areas
What is the law of equal areas?
A line that connects a planet to the Sun sweeps out equal areas in equal time intervals. This means that a planet moves faster when it is closer to the Sun (perihelion) and slower when it is farther away (aphelion). The law implies that planets do not move at constant speeds and experience varying orbital velocities
What is the third law?
Harmonic law
What is the Harmonic law?
The square of the orbital period of a planet (the time it takes to complete one orbit) is directly proportional to the cube of its average distance from the sun. The law implies that planets farther from the Sun take longer to complete an orbit compared to those closer to the sun
