Planes Of Motion Flashcards
What does ‘planes of motion’ refer to?
The way that the body is moving
What is the purpose of the Pilates practice in relation to planes of motion?
To provide multiple options to move the body in each plane, creating an equally trained system
What movements occur in the sagittal plane?
Flexion and extension (which is perpendicular to the ground)
How does the sagittal plane divide the body?
Left to right
What influences movement in the sagittal plane?
Gravity
What movements occur in the frontal plane?
Abduction, adduction, and lateral flexion
How does the frontal plane divide the body?
From front to back (side-side movements)
How does gravity influence this frontal plane?
In lateral flexion
How is the body divided in the transverse or horizontal plane?
Divides the body horizontally, from top to bottom at the torso
What movements are performed in the transverse or horizontal plane?
Twisting and rotation
How does gravity influence rotation in the transverse plane?
It does not influence rotation
Fill in the blank: The sagittal plane allows movement _______.
Front and back (anterior and posterior)
Fill in the blank: The frontal plane allows movement _______.
Lateral or side to side
True or False: The sagittal plane is parallel to the ground.
False
True or False: The transverse plane divides the body from front to back.
False
What are the 3 planes of motion?
Sagittarius, frontal and transverse/horizontal
