Planes/Directional Terms Flashcards
This plane divides body into right and left portions
Sagittal plane
AKA the “Midsagittal plane”, this courses through the midline of the body
Median plane
This plane divides the body into anterior and posterior portions
Coronal planes
Horizontal plane that divides the body into superior and inferior portions
Transverse plane
This direction goes toward the medial line of the body
Medial
This direction goes away from the medial plane
Lateral
This direction corresponds with the front of the body
Anterior
This direction corresponds with the back of the body
Posterior
This direction goes up the body, toward the head
Superior
This direction goes down the body, away from the head
Inferior
This directional term corresponds with limbs and describes the reference point at the attachment of the limbs
Proximal
This directional term corresponds with limbs and goes away from the reference point of attachment
Distal
A position between two points: superior/inferior, anterior/posterior, etc.
Middle
A side-to-side position between medial and lateral structures
Intermediate
Parallel to the long axis of a structure
Longitudinal
