value
the amount a digit is worth in a particular place in a place value chart
base ten system
a system of numeration based on ten digits: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9
place value
the location and value of a digit in the base ten system
digit
a symbol used in a place value chart: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9
standard form
numbers written in all digits EX 37,000,000
word form
numbers written in all words EX thirty-seven million
number word form
a combination of digits and number words (period names only) EX. 37 million
expanded form
a form of writing numbers with addends; each addend represents the value of a digit in the standard form number EX. 30,000,000 + 7,000,000
exponential form
a form of writing numbers which elaborates on expanded form to express each digit as a power of ten EX (3 X 10^7) = (7 X 10^6)
counting numbers
a set of numbers which leave out zer: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, ……..
whole numbers
a set of numbers which include zero: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, ……..
ones (units)
The whole number column furthest to the right; digit X 1 = value
tens
a whole number column to the left of the ones, 10 X greater than the previous column to the right, digit X 10 =value
hundreds
a whole number column to the left of the tens, 10 X greater than the previous column to the right, digit X 100 = value
thousands
a whole number period to the left of the units (ones period), divided into three columns-the ones, the tens, and the hundreds, each column is 10 X greater than the previous column to the right
millions
a whole number period to the left of the thousands period, divided into three columns-the ones, the tens, and the hundreds, each column is 10 X greater than the previous column to the right
billions
a whole number period to the left of the millions ones period, divided into three columns-the ones, the tens, and the hundreds, each column is 10 X greater than the previous column to the right
trillions
a whole number period to the left of the billions period, divided into three columns-the ones, the tens, and the hundreds, each column is 10 X greater than the previous column to the right
period
a grouping of three columns (the ones, the tens, and the hundreds) in a whole number place value chart
