this concerns the love of a place and having a stronger attachment to it

this is the dislike of a place
it can be possible to experience this even if you have a strong attachment to a place, the attachment can be negative

those which are close to us.

those that are distant, both near and far places may have a more emotional attachment
you can feel far away emotionally but you don’t have to be far away physically- Ko Phi Phi
what is experienced place
places you have actually visited
some people argue you would have had to visit a place to become emotionally attached to a place, however some argue having a desire or dislike through media is enough
media places
these are places that are not visited, may have learned about through social media representations- Ko Phi Phi
media can change our sense of place subconsciously
Detroit- often presented as a rundown, neglected city however was ranked by lonely planet as No2 city to visit
what is genius loci
this is the spirit of a place- suggest that every place has a unique spirit or atmosphere based on everything for the location is made up of, now and in the past
what is place character
relates to the specific qualities, attributes and features of a location that make it unique, this is effected by endogenous and exogenous factors
what are endogenous factors
those which originate from within the place and are local
-land use
-topography, the lie of land
-physical geography-waterfalls?
-infrastructure- built services that enhance or essential for living conditions
-demographic characteristics
-location
-economic characteristics
what are exogenous factors
those of which originate from the outside a place and provide linkages and relationships with and to other places, these are related to flows
-people-impact of tourism, workers, migrants (Amsterdam- tourism)
-money and investment- deals, tax, major events (2016 olympics) long lasting impact on a place character
-resources- availability of raw material, products and food. less developed countries may struggle with this

exogenous factors- tourism would have caused city to become busier, leading to short term impacts on sense of place.
in the long term the investment and movements bulldoze some areas of the favelas will have changes the economic and social characteristics of a city.

insiders and outsiders
what are insiders of a place
those who feel at home within such as born in, hold citizen ship in, fluent in local language
what are outsiders
outsiders are the opposite to insiders, the feeling of belonging can change overtime.
may not be accustomed to the culture, shops may not be familiar, the architecture of buildings and cars look different
immigrant children will feel more of an insider than their parents perhaps because they have a different experience to the place than their parents.
what is perspective of a place
people may begin to feel like outsiders even if they initially identified as insiders due to factors such as influx of immigrants.
shops and resultaurants can change (totes)-external agencies
what is Gentrification
this links with perspective
this is the process of renovation and improvement of housing to suit a middle class audience, usually leading to higher class house prices.
gentrifiification can cause insiders to feel like outsiders overtime. (park hill flats)
