pituitary glands Flashcards
pituitary glands
pea sized “master gland” because it controls all other endocrine glands, responsible for cell growth, has two parts
anterior lobe (aka adenohypophysis)
front sac, composed of glandular tissue
posterior lobe (aka neurohypophysis)
back sac, composed of nervous tissue
major hormones of anterior lobe
- growth hormones (GM)
- thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH)
- prolactin (PRL)
- adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH)
growth hormones (GM)/ somatotropin (suh-ma-tuh-trow-pin)
somatotropin stimulate growth
thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH)/ thyrotropin
thyrotropin stimulated thyroid gland
prolactin (PRL)
stimulates milk production
adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH)
stimulates adrenal cortex
gonadotropic; luteinizing hormone (LH)
luteinizing hormone stimulates testosterone in testes
gonadotropic; follicle stimulating hormone (FSH)
follicle stimulating hormone stimulates growth of eggs and sperm production
major hormones in posterior lobes
- oxytocin (OT)
- vasopressin (aka ADH)
oxytocin (OT)
simulates labor
antidiuretic hormone (ADH) vasopressin (va-suh–preh-sn)
vasopressin (va-suh–preh-sn) increases water reabsorption
