Piston Flashcards
What is a pressure balance duct?
Prevents extremely weak mixture, by making the outside atmosphere proportional so creates a pressure difference allowing for fuel to move through
What does the diffuser do?
Prevents extremely strong mixture, by stoping fuel moving into the atomiser
What does the main jet do?
Controls the amount of fuel entering being released into the diffuser
What does a atomiser do?
Turns the fuel into a vapour because, fuel can only be heat in the form of vapour
In Lycoming Mixture Graphs what does EGT and CHT mean?
EGT = exhaust head gas
CHT = cylinder head gas
lycoming mixture graph axis?
Temperature and Fuel mixture (Rich and Lean)
What are the lines on the lycoming mixture graph?
EGT
CHT
Horse Power
Fuel flow
What is measured at the top of the EGT and CHT lines?
The sysotrimectric (chemically correct) mixture ratio (15:1)
Based on the lycoming mixture graph what would the ratios be for starting
9:1
Based on the lycoming mixture graph what would the ratios be for Take off?
12:1
Based on the lycoming mixture graph what would the ratios be for Climb?
14:1
Based on the lycoming mixture graph what would the ratios be for power cruise?
17:1
Based on the lycoming mixture graph what would the ratios be for economy cruise?
19:1
Before and after the curves of the EGT and CHT what are the sections called?
Before is the fuel cooled and after is the Air cooled
How do you measure the CHG?
By measuring the hottest cylinder
Based on the lycoming mixture graph what do we mean by Air cooled and fuel cooled?
During Fuel cooled the fuel is evaporating so causing it to cool down
During Air cooled there is less fuel and more air cause it to cool down
What does the Accelerator pump prevent?
Prevents lean cut, which is a lag of fuel being inserted into the Venturi when the throttle is increased and air is following creating an weak mixture which causes low amount of power
Accelerator pump is the primary pump, but how many pumps do you need?
3 pumps
What does a boost lever do?
Provides a rich mixture at high RPM for high performing aircraft
What are the ways to prime an engine?
Accelerator Pump, primary hand pump, electric pump (auto)
Where is the Carburettor located on a lychoming engine?
Underneath engine and a single carburettor
What is below the carburettor?
The air intake system
What is the risk of pressure and temperature decreasing in a carburettor?
Ice risk up to 18 to 25c decreases which is increased in risk of visible mixture and vaporised fuel. This is. called carburettor icing which can limit the movement of the throttle
